Lets face it, you can google and find natural remedies within seconds so when I decided after coming down with a sore throat, sinus infection, and a double ear infection that I was going to write about the natural remedies I use to get my family through things like this all the time; I thought, "Im going to tell them my favorites!"
First off, Im a mother so when I get sick it is usually because my little adorable minions are also sick so obviously the very last thing I want to do is find out a remedy calls for me to go grab something I dont have. This rules out elderberry. Maybe (and thats a strong maybe) one day I will make a batch ahead of time like all the other smart women out there, but that hasn't happened yet. I will say I am a lucky lazy mom with an awesome significant other who grabbed the kids Plantery Herbals "Well Child" from the grocery store on the way home. This is a tincture that includes elderberry. It tastes great, works wonders, and it doesn't run a bad price. (There I go again, giving out free advertisement.) However, he doesn't get home until REALLY late and it is always best to start helping your body fight as soon as possible, especially because we live in the United States; a place of fast pace.
So the first remedy I go for happens during my panic mode when I realize I have to cancel all of my daughters appointments and prepare to be stuck in bed with my nursing son all day. Epsom Salt (or real sea salt) Lavender and/or Lemon Essential Oil Bath.
Epsom salt is pretty awesome! It helps the body detox, relieves stress, relaxes muscles from pain and cramping, and even helps with constipation! This is important for when you are sick because your immune system doesnt operate at its absolute best if it is being hindered by toxins, which we do our best to avoid by using all natural cleaning, eco friendly freakin everything, eating healthy, getting plenty of time outside, and exercise, but we still run into environmental toxins that are obviously out of our control. Not to mention, when you are sick everything hurts making cranky, sore, and exhausted kids. So I love my epsom salt!
Lavender essential oil is safe for infants and children! This is huge! Lavender has some of the most extensive uses from fever reducing, to relaxation, to healing cuts and burns, and SO MUCH MORE! It is such a blessing that is safe for children! Especially when Im in panic mode drawing a bath because chances are this early in the game all I have discovered is the signs that they are sick, not exactly what they have. Not to mention, it is the only essential oil I go through EVERY SINGLE MONTH so I always have this in the house. Always.
Lemon essential oil is also safe and a great germ killer! Not to mention it is also uplifting. Sometimes I want to leave this one out for the uplifting part...I know Im going to be sick soon, how quickly do I really want them to recover?
Sometimes this remedy is enough for them. I will get them out and they will be fine running around like the bug never hit them. This is usually right around the time I discover what they have because i have started to feel it....So on to my second favorite! Coconut Oil with Melalueca Essential Oil Self Massage.
I use:
1 tsp of coconut oil 3 drops of melalueca (If you dont have melalueca, contact me first of all! But in the mean time Lavender and lemon will also work!)
By now Im draining the bath of luke warm water and my happy butt naked children are running around screaming again and my head is pounding, my ears are ringing, my throat is scratchy, and my nose is stuffy. Why did I give them that bath again? Oh right, I'm a good mom and I didnt want them to get the full brunt of what I am feeling right now. I will have to convince them to take a second bath later...so I can get one!
The reality is kids will respond better to natural remedies. Especially if they eat well. They are young, they are active, their immune systems are at the best they will ever be in their lives! You and me...not so much. I use coconut oil and melalueca, occasionally if I hear my death bed calling, I will grab the oregano too, but I use melalueca currently for two reasons. One, I prefer it over the famous "on guard" and "theives" which I find are too hot for me. Two, melalueca is safe for children, which is obviously important when you have a nursing one, plus there is a chance the first remedy did not have my children running around the house, so it is nice I can also use this remedy on them!
Then the BEST part! I gently massage this blend on my forehead, cheek bones, ears, neck muscles, and shoulders. The massage not only helps my body absorb the melalueca, but it also helps me release any toxins that dont serve me. And HELLO! It is a massage, even if I am giving it to myself.
For my children, I massage the blend on to the bottoms of their feet and they love it! My little girl will ask for more and more and more! I will massage their shoulders and neck as well, but instead of their face, I will rub the blend on to their chest. Then we all cuddle for a movie!!
My third favorite is one I usually end up doing just for myself, but on occasion I can convince my oldest to give it a try. Lime and Honey.
There are a lot of recomendations like eating raw garlic for example that I am not going to lie I have tried in desperate times. However, being completely honest with you, I dont enjoy torturing myself that much and in the case of hot tea....I am a VERY slow drinker so my lemon cayene honey tea ends up cold and nasty before I finish it. The lime and honey trick always works for me. Its quick, I think it tastes great actually, and I always have lime and honey.
I cut one lime in to four parts and put about half a teaspoon of raw honey on each piece. Then I eat them! Even if I had a killer sore throat, this will kick it in the butt!
So there you have it! My top 3 favorite natural remedies. I would love to hear what your favorites are!
